NEWLY CROWNED Intercol champions Naparima College will
go after a coveted national double today when they face El Dorado Senior
Comprehensive in the BWIA Secondary Schools Football League "Big
4" final replay at Skinner Park from 4 pm.The southerners are coming
off a 1-0 victory over Princes Town SC in Saturday's Royal Bank Intercol
final and are gunning to cop their second prize but cannot afford to drop
gears against an "El Do" side desperate for some silverware
following their season of hardwork.
A season of just over two months of school football ends today and the
two teams involved will be anxious to put on a good showing in the climax.
The Blue Thunder came away easy winners in the East/ Central Zone before
shutting out St Anthony's College 2-0 in the semi-finals. They then went
on to hold "Naps" to a 2-2 draw in an enthralling final at the
Queen's Park Oval earlier this month before bad light prevented a decider
from penalty kicks. Strikers Abede Fernandez and Kwame Wiltshire have
numerous problems for opposing defences in the past and midfielder Brenton
Stewart and Kirt Hutchings will be just as eager to inflict defeat on
the Intercol Kings.
The South Zone champions have won 19
matches out of a 20-game unbeaten streak. Skipper Leon Brown will again
aim to control the midfield with hope that Atiba McKnight, the goalscorer
in Saturday's final, Kurt Borel and Jason Hector make use of their scoring
chances. Stopper Jacey Peters and goalkeeper Aquellius Sylvester will
want to continue their solid work from previous matches.
Today The Park may not be filled with as much fans
as Saturday's Intercol final, but the southerners are expected to turn
out in numbers to back their team to the double success while an "El
Do" posse will be keen to see their outfit finish the season on a
high note.
SECONDARY schools football champions Naparima College have named defender
Jacey Peters as their Most Outstanding Player for 1999. Naps held their
awards ceremony at the school on Sunday. Peters headed a list of several
award recipients on a day of celebrations for winning the South Zone League,
BWIA Big 4 and Royal Bank Intercol crowns. Before Sunday's function, members
of the team took part in San Fernando's City Day parade through the streets
of the southern city.
Outgoing captain Leon Brown was honoured
for outstanding performance and leadership. Both he and Peters are contenders
to be named among the Five Players of the Year when the SSFL hold their
annual presentation ceremony today at Naparima Bowl from 5 pm. David John
Williams, chairman of Vibe CT 105 W Connection was also honoured for sponsoring
the Naparima team. And school principal Eddison Sookoo was showered with
appreciation by the team for his efforts. Each member of the side and
technical staff, headed by coach Jan Steadman received gold medals engraved
"Triple Champions."
Among a list of former Naparima students
and members of the schools Old Boys Association present at Sunday's ceremony
was former President of Trinidad and Tobago Noor Hassanali.
